Unless you used Metazoa's patcher for 2.6.1 or 2.8.1, the advanced menu for fonts was only available when you selected a Kobo supplied font with support for those options.

With 2.10.0, Amasis, Avenir Next, Caecilia, Georgia, Gill Sans, Kobo Nickel and Malabar will show advanced beside the font name when selected in the Aa menu. The other Kobo supplied fonts and sideloaded fonts do not have that advanced option. Given the inconsistent results I found with Metazoa's patcher and sideloaded fonts, I suspect those 7 fonts are the only ones with hinting for the font weight and sharpness.
