From the rcS of FW 2.10.0 I learned that only if
/usr/local/Kobo/pickel can-upgrade returns
1, the reader accepts an update file. So maybe this can distinguish between older an newer Touch models. On my Touch C the return value is 1.
Edit: This seems to check the charge of the battery rather than the model.
