Do a full charge overnight and then a reset.

My Kindle Fire HD 2012 was giving a sparking sound yesterday sounding like one of the layers was cracked. I charged overnight and the sound is gone.

Try an overnight charge. If the problem persists, hold the power key for 60 seconds to do a full reboot. Some of these problems on the Fires are intermittent and disappear after the overnight charge and / or reboot.

Just to see if I could duplicate your problems with an eBook on the HDX 2013, I tried some changes in the font pane with an eBook open. With black text on a white background I did notice that light blue border around the edges not noticeable anywhere else. With dark sepia text on a light sepia background I noticed a faint sepia border. With light text on a dark background (my usual reading setup) there was no border showing and the text was crystal clear. There was almost no glare as compared to the HD 2012 which does have lots of glare.

Try the light text on a dark background with a 50% brightness and see if all your "blotches" disappear in that eBook. Those "blotches" may also be reflections from a light source like a fluorescent bulb. Change rooms and see if it is still there.

I do believe that the Kindle Reader App on the HDX 2013 definitely needs an upgrade. There is supposed to be a major upgrade coming in 2 weeks. Hopefully, it will all improve.
