I read with an antiglare protector for years. It's great for two things. Lower maintenance for fingerprints and yes, there's less glare. It also does, as you suspect, reduce clarity. Some people experience the loss of clarity as a sort of fuzziness. Myself and others could see a 'rainbow effect' on any screen with white in it, basically the uneven surface of the protector acts like a prism breaking the light apart.

If you read on darker, non-white backgrounds (and if you ever do experience eye strain while transitioning from the backlightless eink, you should try darker color schemes, it can help), you'll notice the loss of clarity less. I switched to a crystal clear protector with my newest device to regain clarity, and I don't regret it, but it is a fingerprint magnet, as most shiny glossy surfaces are. If I weren't reading on this device, I'd definitely get matte (antiglare).
