@rkr: Firstly, sorry for not getting back to you. I read your other responses and couldn't think of anything. Actually, one thing did occur to me overnight.

Is the clock on the device correct? And does it stay correct after the power off and on? What is displayed on the home screen is based on time. If there is a problem with the clock, this could explain things.

But, I think you will need to do a factory reset. DNSB's advice for this is good. There are two other things I would do. Firstly, take a copy of books that you have sideloaded onto the main memory. That gives you an easy way to get them back on. I would also use my Kobo Utlitites plugin in calibre to store the reading status of all the books. That way they can be restored after the factory reset.
