It does of course need to index the books, but the number of books already in the index has no bearing on the time taken to index new books. ie, if you add 10 new books to your Kindle, it will take the same time to index them regardless of whether you currently have 1 book or 701 books on the device.

I would always recommend adding books to the PW in small batches (no more than 20 at a time) and letting one batch finish indexing before adding the next.
