I had the same experience. I went to the B&N near a large university campus. I too thought it was strange that they weren't staffing the Nook desk on release day. I had to go to the help desk in the center of the store to ask for someone to help me. Then the person who checked me out was unaware of the 10% member's discount that didn't initially come up on the computer. I pointed to the big banner advertisement hanging from the ceiling above his cash register to justify that it was a real deal.
