If she could afford it, she'd buy the Juki brand. The more expensive brands can apparently do a variety of decorative stitches (all do knits and delicate fabrics better than a serger attachment, from what I gather; my sewing expertise is limited to fixing a hole in jeans or putting a button back on, I'm afraid).

She also recommends trying some at a local store, if possible (not possible in all areas or when giving a gift, I know); if you go mail-order instead, feel free to use her site (it is an affiliate site), if you don't mind her earning a bit for the advice.
