I have no problems. Normally I just wrap my hand around it: three fingers on one side, thumb on the other, index on the back. I can even turn the page like this, even when wearing thin gloves (big ones would be too bulky for maneuverability).
I can also just hold it from the side without wrapping my hand around it no problems. If I do this position with a gloved hand it becomes dangerous as it feels quite slippery.
The kobo is smaller from what I gather and buttons aren't that big of a deal in my opinion. Not for an ereader.
Included is a gloved pic and a normal pic to five you an idea. Obviously it also depends on the size of his hands. With the second option you can also use your pinky top cradle the bottom of the aura. As kingjain says you can only really read with the positions. If you want to do more you'll have both hands to navigate the menus and such.
