I really do think most times the damage is caused when people carry their Kindle's in a bag and other things in it can put pressure on the screen, or if it's in a pocket and it gets flexed with your movement. Then when it's lightly thrown down on something or knocked to the floor, there is a weakness already there and the slight bang then causes the damage to appear.

I agree with this. I treat my Kindles and Sonys similarly and (knock on wood) haven't had a broken screen yet. I do think carrying them where they are frequently flexed or bumped makes the screens weaker and thus predisposed to damage.
