The Kobo is not set to the same subnet as my PC. The Usbnet adapter settings are untouched except for changing the dropbear port from 22 to 8123 - that port setting should have no influence at all.
I also gave up the whole stuff (for now) because of the trouble connecting the Glo via Usbnet (see posting #33) - and I cannot login with dropbear.
