Upgrade to Maverick? I've just downgraded from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard and disabled updates in order to solve the long-standing problem of not being able to connect reliably to a host of routers. The only one ML would connect to was - fanfare - Apple's Airport Extreme (and probably Airport Express also).
Bonus: I got my scroll arrows back, but I pay a price in not being able to sync my computer calendar with icloud and one or two other nice things that came in Lion and ML.
