my background doesn't change on restart but if I bring it to a homescreen with just one app, the background is actually grey towards the middle and then fades to black as you get towards the borders. It almost plays tricks with the eyes and if you have a lot of icons it may just appear black as the icons would rest on top of the grey in the middle.
As for the reader's night mode, do you mean just making the background black? In that case, my background is black but certainly not as pitch black and the hardware border around the screen.
