Do you think that historical fiction is necessarily written for women? I've also read a fair amount of historical fiction written by women authors (eg Lindsey Davis's "Falco" series) and again they don't strike me as being particularly aimed at women. These books would certainly fit the definition of this thread: "historical fiction written by a female author".
