Lasts are pretty tricky. I used to work in an Italian leather store, and Armando Pollini's shoes fit me perfectly, but most women said their toes were squished. A. Pollini had a slightly narrow last, w/ shorter toes, which isn't a common combination.
The other thing I noticed about lasts is that some are more straight and others have more of a curve or slight "C" shape. New Balance sneakers, which many rave about, fit me horribly, because they have no curve. They're made for a straighter foot. Since Nike's fit me well, I would guess that folks who love New Balance, seriously dislike, Nike's.
