I have a new Windows 8 64 bit laptop that is having trouble with Calibre. It is not a Surface Tablet, but a Toshiba Satellite. I have tried Version 0.90, 1.1 and 1.8 and they all do the same thing. I am unable to add either a epub or pdf file, even one that does not have drm on it. When I try to add a file, nothing happens. The application just sits there and the book never gets added. I am only able to abort the file and then Calibre goes back to responding. This has happened with multiple epubs and pdf files, all without drm.
When I tried to add a book with debugging turned on, it completely hung up my computer. I was unable to end the application, even with task manager. I wound up having to do a hard shut down with the power button.
I did try uninstalling Adobe Digital Editions in case that was the problem, and reinstalling it. I've tried the most recent version from Adobe and an older version 1.7, completely uninstalling everything, both ADE and Calibre and rebooting in between. I rebooted after uninstalling each version of Calibre and installing another as well.
I have used Calibre successfully for years and am completely stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions?
