I can think of a few situations where reading the metadata from filename rather than from book itself would be preferable. We are still in the adding to Calibre phase here. Suppose you have a slew of publications, long titles and various editions of same, the chance is big that internal book metadata has the same title in your various copies or editions. Importing these into Calibre (from the local file system) is then going to cause issues if retrieving that internal title instead.
So the point is more a how to get them into Calibre in the first place without the first imported copy getting overwritten or the second added copy ignored depending on merge settings, when you want both or however many copies you have
