How to prevent apps from going in background on screensaver/USB?

I've noticed that some apps (example: kindle explorer) go in background if you press the power button (=screensaver) or plug in the USB cable, and must be killed from terminal, while other (example: leafpad) don't. I gave a glance to launch scripts but couldn't see relevant differences... Why does this happen? How to prevent "backgrounding" apps from this behaviour?

Kterm instead doesn't go in background maybe, but quits

Thanks in advance
