Agree... as you said, there needs to be a balance.
Buying the latest Kindle, Kobo, Bokeen, Icarus, the iPad and the iPad Mini each and every year is a bit... uh... obsessive. I can fully understand that a spouse is against that.
I wouldn't care if my girlfriend buys some new $insert_stuff_here once in a while, but if she would buy a pair of shoes every WEEK, then it would become problematic.
To be honest, if prices are reasonable, and I/we can afford it, I expect to be able to buy the heck whatever I want, and when I want it. I'd allow a partner to do the same, obviously. You can be QUITE sure that I'm not going to come home and say: "Hi, honey! I've just bought myself a new car! It was on offer, for just €28995!"

Everyone buys according to their own financial resources and tastes. Some folks are buying self driving cars for 150K and trade them in every year. I'm sure those kinds of "obsessive" purchases are not even considered by 99.9999% of the country.
If folks are at the low end of the economic scale, a PW 2012 is more than enough to just read eBooks. If folks are well endowed economically and like electronic "toys," then a PW 2013 AND HDX 2013 provide great entertainment.
