I don't recall any seeing many, if any, problems with 'first time' Windows installs of this nature.

Well you'll never know if you don't try - I wouldn't have expected that video player gadget to create trouble with calibre - but it did, and it interfered with my Add Books through the back door process - although not as drastically as whatever is causing your problem.

I used to think the same way - start with a freshly formatted drive. But circumstances forced me to try the in-line replace, I was really surprised with the result because the first system I tried it on had been truly butchered.
But I have another idea.

http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/cust...ment-variables there is an environment variable listed called CALIBRE_NO_NATIVE_FILEDIALOGS - I've no idea what it does or what values it accepts but it might be worth trying, I'm reticent to play with it because I am not sure what to expect of it.
