I am emailing those books to my kindle account, so it is my understanding that they need to be mobi as amazon will not accept mailed ebooks in azw3. I embed the font (trebuchet) and email them to my account so that I can use whispersync and it works fine, font-wise and whispersync-wise.

I could be wrong, but I thought true mobi7 files were unable to support embedded fonts. I haven't got a clue as to what calibre creates when it converts to a file with a mobi extension. I know the Kindle Previewer creates a file with a mobi extension, but the file actually contains both mobi7 and KF8 versions, at least that is my understanding. When I use the Send To Kindle app on my computer, Amazon decides which version (mobi7 or KF8) to send to the device. At least that is how I think it works.
