Have you tried turning off your anti-virus to see if it is the problem? Some anti-virus programs consider calibre's heavy use of files suspicious. If that solves it, you might exempt the calibre directory from its scrutiny.

Is there any reason at all to have encryption going on in this particular use of your mail program? Could this be part of the problem?
