I don't know if the situation is different in the US, but in NZ there are lots of places that sell Kobo gift cards in store, but none none of them have the cards available for sale online, so the only way to get one seems to be to visit the shop in person.

No gift cards might be a reason not to buy books from Kobo, but if you get an Aura you are not limited to buying from Kobo. You could still get gift cards for other shops like B&N and put the books you buy with them on your Aura.
