For clarity--we cannot tick all the boxes. We are limited to two categories. We can enter up to...7 tags/keywords.

A few years ago, we could enter up to five categories.

The categories can, however, be changed, so an author could "move" the book around trying various categories at different times.

The categories are quite limited and are generally based on the US library of Congress cataloging categories. So, for example, there is no such thing as "Urban Fantasy" or "cozy mysteries."

There are other various Kindle categories, but those are not "setable" -- so when you see a ranking of "number 56 in such and such" that is not something that authors can set. We can "request" our book be added to something like that, but Amazon doesn't always respond.

So, for example, if you look at my Executive Affairs and Under Witch Ghost short story -- you'll see it is ranked 82 in:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #6,233 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)

#82 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Humor & Satire > General Humor

But I don't set that. I can't even see a category labeled "Humor and Satire" when selecting categories.

This happens in other stores as well. Without a Bang over on Kobobooks is showing up under:

#3370 in Fiction & Literature , Fiction , Short Stories
#3907 in Fiction & Literature , Fiction , Religious
#2281 in Sci Fi & Fantasy , Science Fiction , Adventure

Note that I did NOT choose Religious--the story has nothing to do with religious and I have no idea why it shows up there. But there you have it. I've actually contacted kobobooks on the Religious thing--it's dystopian fiction, which isn't religious in my opinion, but perhaps using that word in the description caused it to show up there? No idea. Of course Kobobooks has its hands full right now so I don't expect an answer anytime soon...
