The problem is that you can't achieve the text contrast needed on an LCD screen on a low light level, which can cause eyestrain. Also, the contrast between a lit screen and dark surroundings is higher than with a non-lit screen and an external light, further causing strain.

And again, I doubt it is true a light shining into your eyes or reflecting towards it are the same thing. I guess the jury is out on if backlight or frontlight are any different in this regard, but a top-down light does act differently.
