Temporary marking of books in the library
This allows you to select books from your calibre library manually and mark them. This 'mark' will remain until you restart calibre, or clear the marks. KG mentioned somewhere that the pin can be customised 'in the usual' way, I think that's done in the resources folder - I've never had cause to change anything there.
So I assumed the OP had a customised their icon resources to have their own icons etc. Prior to 1.5 a gold star was used in the cover grid to indicate 'marks', its been replaced by a gold pin; I suspect most people missed seeing the gold stars, or assumed they were something to do with ratings.
I know books nominated as being within Find Duplicates exclusion groups have 'marks' that 'persist' - maybe the OP has stumbled on another instance where temporary marks aren't temporary.
