I'm pretty sure I already posted the whole story on MobileRead some time back, but it was Larry Niven.
I met him in a bookstore (without knowing who he was) after I had just read my first book by Larry Niven (Ringworld) and basically went berserk telling "this guy" about what a GREAT author this guy Niven was, and about how I planned to read every book I could find of his and if "this guy" had any sense at all, and liked sci-fi, he'd buy the books too.
And then I got to the counter and the clerk asked me if I was going to have my books autographed by the author, and when I said "huh??" the clerk said "well, I saw you back there talking to him, so I thought maybe you'd want to get your books autographed."
One of my "major moron" moments.
