I just bought the Kindle Paperwhite (wifi version) from Best Buy, after finding that ordering it from Amazon would take until the end of this month.
Looking at the screen, I can see the slight improvements, but I wouldn't have bought it for that alone: I was interested mostly in the ability to read Japanese text vertically and use the Japanese dictionary. I'm happy to report that if you load up a Japanese-language text, it automatically downloads a dictionary (as well as looking up terms on Japanese wikipedia), and you can have a Japanese keyboard.
Anyway, re: the screen, comparing it side by side with a Kindle Keyboard, I can see an improved contrast and more of a creamier background white (still greyish though), and I can see the improved DPI when looking at fine details.
I wonder what Amazon will do next year? I would be interested in some point in one that was lighter and thinner (though of course with a similar battery life). I also prefer the sliding button that the Kindle Keyboard had.
