In case not known Black Cat Linda; while too late for your current problem, but looking to the future, there is a tool (seemingly little known about) included with Windows 8 that makes and restores recovery images which includes everything that "Refresh" does as well as ones desktop applications. So, as long as one has created previously a recovery image (typically the image size is around 20-30GB, depending on size of applications), one can do a "refresh" without losing anything.

Here is not the place to get into detail, but googling "recimg.exe" will turn up how to run it from the command line.
