Mind you, the color hues were much more faint than on last years PW1 and in general the screen is much more uniform.

From what I have seen this year though the pinholes are much more prominent and the background tint still varies widely as does the brightness of the lights. The one I picked up yesterday is more blue, not as yellow. This does make the contrast appear better, but there are other issues like the pinholes. My friend has 2 pinholes on hers, but is keeping it.

Obviously I'm returning the one I picked up. I have to say from the PW2's I have seen, the PW1 had better contrast and blacker text. At least the PW1's I've seen. Just my personal experience, so please there's no need to tell me that hasn't been your experience and I'm incorrect. Everyone's experience is different, but equally valid, so hopefully this post won't open that line of discussion again.

Anyway, I'm happy for those of you that have good ones and are pleased and I'm also happy Amazon has improved the color hue issue even if it's still not where it should be, to my eyes at least. Unfortunately, overall, I remain very disappointed in Amazon's quality control on the Paperwhite. Ah well. Maybe next year.
So sorry you got another bad one. I think Amazon's quality control must be nearly non-existent. My PW2 is okay, but just. If I didn't modify my books to make the text bold, I would have severe eyestrain. The text is washed out compared to Kindles that do not have the light layer and compared to my iPhone and iPad. I'm only keeping it because it is better than my Touch was, and so I got rid of the Touch.

Another complaint I have about the PW2 is the battery life is SHORT! I bought my PW2 on Wednesday morning, did the set up routine, then fully charged it. I then read on it from Wed afternoon until last night. I read perhaps 10 or 12 hours during that period with the light averaging about level 12. The result was that I had only about 20% charge left. WiFi was on, but that shouldn't eat the battery. I always left the WiFi on on my Touch (and all other Kindles I've owned) and they last at least a week or two, usually two, with heavy usage. Basically I'm getting two days of usage before having to recharge. (BTW, I only loaded two books so indexing was not the issue.)

BTW, I believe I can read longer periods with less eyestrain on my iPhone and iPad than on my PW2.
