As you suggested Find Duplicates appears to create the 'marks' when Calibre starts, I just installed a vanilla portable 1.6 and I don't see the 'extra' marked books

Unfortunately Find Duplicates cannot be disabled and I don't want to uninstall it because I think I might lose my exclusions - in my main library there are 200+ due to revisions, translations, 'plagiarisms' etc.

ETA : for the record, the Find Duplicates exclusions did get gold stars in the cover grid in version 1.5 and earlier, but I don't use the cover grid so I never saw them, so they never bothered me. Also the gold stars/pins in the cover grid are not as obvious as the pins in the row number cells.
