I forgot to come back and thank you, back when I posted this. That seems to have solved the problem.
The book I was having trouble with at the time was especially annoying: it was bought from Peanut Press / Palm Reader / Ereader.com which was later acquired by Barnes and Noble - so I could re-download it from B&N - and **their** version was messed up as well (I was darn sure the book had more than 117 pages
).
