Is your child old enough to at least charge the device unsupervised? If so, then you might want to consider the Nook HD 7" tablet. It has gorilla glass. I find it pretty sturdy. And you can set up kids accounts on the device that won't allow internet access. It allows multiple accounts. You could also put a game or two on it to let him or her have some fun in between reading sessions! There are tons of free games available via Google Play.

The thing is, it would have to be charged probably once every day or two. But he or she can just plug it in at night and it would be all ready to go in the morning.

Right now a second hand or refurbished Nook HD 7" can be had for about $100 on ebay. Many refurbs are even offered with a 1-year warranty. A brand new Nook HD is $129 for the 8gb model. They all have sd card slots to expand the space.
