I don't think people are going looking for trouble with the PW1/2. They are checking and discussing them because since the first PW release, trouble found them by itself. Nobody wants to hate a product, but I'd wager most that did, did so because they just couldn't be comfortable reading on it - and only then started analyzing deeply what it was about, what to do to lessen/remedy the issue etc.
Buying tip: If you are sensitive to the screen, the baby Kindle is even cheaper and has a much more consistent screen experience - very black text to boot. That is, if you can deal with case or external lighting of course.
