It's just me. I installed a new copy on top of my old copy just to see what it would do and yep - it worked just fine now.
So it was indeed that pesky Internet Download Manager that I uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller that wiped out my Calibre database.
Sorry to raise an alarm. Should have known better.
