I have 3 ebook readers, well 4 technically. I have a Kindle Keyboard (stays at home, a Nook Simple Touch (stays at home mostly), a Kindle 6 inch (in my purse always) and a Nook HD (technically, my Itouch also lets me read ebooks, but I rarely use it for that these days).
I bought the HD soley because I was caring for a sick relative for 5 months and the lighting in his home for reading was just terrible. They had a special on the HD and I really wanted to try a tablet. Since he didn't have wifi, updates or web surfing was limited to hospital visits. It's actually too heavy for comfortable reading (or maybe I was simply spoiled with the ereaders), but it handles magazines and pdf files far better than my ereaders, so I decided to keep it once I got home.
Lending: Yes, sometimes I lend my kindle to a friend or family member, but it's the 6 inch one that is lent. It cost $50 and wouldn't kill me if it was lost or damaged.
