Nope it's maliciously hidden behind 2.8.1 as if to confuse those that might use that patch thinking it's going to work fine on their 2.8.1 and then, I don't know, whatever goes wrong due to the fact that this firmware is not letting the patch work, maybe a bricked reader for all we know.
And if you already have 2.8.1, it will not be upgraded to 2.8.1b. Going by what little Kobo has said, it is a very minor update though looking at the 2.8.1b and the 2.6.2 files, it appears that they are making fairly large changes in the nickel and libnickel files.

Not a necessity for a new firmware release though very nice to have. Kobo has been notoriously close mouthed about what changes are made by their firmware updates.

Until then, this endeavor by Kobo seems rather malevolent.
Boot time with an external uSD card with a large number of books has been reduced is one improvement I've noted.

As for your insistence on malevolence, I doubt that Kobo's developers have been deliberately breaking Metazoa's patcher. In my opinion, you are mistaking indifference for malevolence.

If they were malevolent, 2.8.1b would be being pushed to all of Kobo ereaders currently running 2.8.1.

David
