The last sentence made me perk up: what kind of varnish is that? I keep wondering what I could use to protect my purple ebay case from getting dirty. It would have to be something that is not poisonous, so I don't have to wash my hands every time I use my Kindle.

Why did I not think of this before ????
You remember that I wrote that the first tiny stain was due to olive oil ? Well, reading your post, all of a sudden an idea came through my head. So I took a white cloth, poured a tiny bit (really tiny) of olive oil (we have 5 different sorts in the house, don't ask, so I took the one with the faintest smell), and "worked" it in the cover. It is now a tad darker, the stains have disappeared, and my guess is that the cover is protected for a little while. I may have to do this regularly, but I don't mind. And it is not toxic too.
My guess: neutral shoe polish would work wonderfully too.
