I received my Kindle Paperwhite (PW) yesterday, which replaces my Kindle Keyboard (KK). I thought I would make some quick comments for those considering a similar upgrade.
Initially, I was surprised by the relatively small size of the PW. I guess I shouldn't have been, given that the PW does not have a physical keyboard.
I try not to be obsessive about this sort of thing, but I did inspect the screen for obvious defects and found one white speck when viewing a black or nearly-black page on the screen. It's in a corner and is not visible when reading a book and so is not an issue for me. Screen brightness uniformity is very important to me, and fortunately my PW is quite good in that respect.
The biggest change going from the KK to the PW is the touch interface. It takes some getting used to but I will like it in time--if for no other reason than the fact that navigating a book is so much easier. I'm old and my memory is poor, so I suspect the x-ray feature will also be quite helpful.
One thing I miss is the physical page-turn buttons. I'm sure I'll get used to this in time. Also, the screen has a rough or scratchy surface (unlike my iPhone) and I don't like that. I'm not sure if this is a coating applied during manufacture or if the screen is just in need of cleaning.
I purchased the official Amazon cover in black and I like it a whole lot. The PW snaps in quite securely, and it looks very professional. Also, I love the instant on/off feature and the magnetic latch. The Amazon cover for my KK had a elastic cord that kept the cover closed, and I got tired of always having to wrap this around the front cover.
The total cost of the PW (without special offers) and cover including sales tax was $200, which is a lot for me. But, if I get as much use out of the PW as I have with the KK, it will be money well spent.
