No, that's not the problem. The options are greyed out because that feature isn't available for computer versions of the app (or the Cloud reader), only for kindle devices, and mobile apps. And the books aren't syncing because they're mobi files. Whispersync doesn't support mobi format.

Ah, ok, I must have missed this part. So you do have books in your archives (library) already, just not amazon purchases.

Unfortunately, the only solution is to replace all the mobi files in your library with ones that have been converted to a different file format. Actually, since you already have all these books in Calibre, you could just use Calibre to "bulk" convert them all to AZW3. Then when you email them to your kindle, you won't need to put "convert" in the subject.

Unfortunately, even though whispersync supports AZW3 files, they still have to go through Amazon's server in order to be recognized as such. So when loading them into the PC app, you'll have to connect the app to your kindle archives (library) and download them that way.

Opening the files directly from your computer will import them into the Kindle app, but they won't be sync-able unless they're downloaded from your library.
