Normal lighting? Amazon itself says to use the lower light levels when in a dimply lit room.
I don't know what the difference is between the white speck on my screen and the black dot on wlsinwi's screen, but I find that it is more visible the brighter I make the light. Not a problem for me since I prefer the light at a 12 or below.
