The DbVersion entry shows 88 for the 2.8.1b database. I think this is the same as the 2.9.0 database version though I don't have a 2.9.0 device handy at the moment to check.

Anyhow, Calibre 1.5.0 seems happy enough with it. Adding and removing books, updating metadata, database backup and compress, etc.
