I looked up Revo. Full 64bit handling is a feature of the Pro version. Explains why it got confused uninstalling the 32bit version.
I also wouldn't recommend Revo to the uninitiated - you have to at least know the difference between the registry and folders.

Did my backups, including my boot disk.
Used Windows to uninstall the 64bit version.
Didn't delete the settings folder.
Portable version still worked, including Viewer.
Re-installed 64bit version in PROGS, rather than Program Files.
Works, including Viewer.
Checked Temp folder - it is only shared with Owner, so not a Windows sharing problem.

I can only assume that something went wrong with a file in the install folder.

So, if the problem occurs.
1) Uninstall with Windows. This does not affect the settings.
2) Re-install.

In the long run, this is all I did. File associations don't matter as the installation goes back into the same folder.

On a lighter note, regarding people who say "Yes" to everything. A friend of my father's bought a hi-fi near the top end of the range. He believed in getting full value for his money, so he turned every knob and selected every switch on the front panel. Treble turned full up, bass turned full up, treble-cut on, mono on. Then he played albums of steam-trains going past. Didn't sound too god.
