Yes, although references are made in some books to past ones. Some also make reference to Luke turning to the Dark Side and Leia saving him. Those references are to the Dark Horse comic series Dark Empire.

Previously I've done what you are suggesting and skipped around as books/trilogies etc. caught my interest.
