As I recall, it was just those few seconds in the beginning. It scared me, too--I don't like sound effects or background music in audiobooks.
I recently listened to
The Cypress House by Michael Koryta and it had these cheesy sound effects every time the paranormal thing would happen. Annoyed me so much.
