Networked libraries supported yet?

I know for a long time Calibre has not supported libraries on networked file systems, like samba shares.
Has this perhaps changed in recent versions?

Is there an official way to share one library among several machines?

Particularly, is there a safe way to do it if the machines are a mix of Windows and Linux?

For the record, I've been happily storing my library on my local NAS for a while, and accessing it from my two windows machines. Since I only use it from one at a time, I figured my risk of locking issues was acceptable.
But now I'm interested in trying the Linux version of Calibre as well, and the risk of file system incompatibilities has me more concerned.

So any recommendations for sharing one library across my several machines?

thx,
