Actually there is as I found recently. I think it is also a relatively recent addition to the featureset. If you copy a book to a library which does not yet contain al of the custom columns, Calibre will prompt you and offer to create these columns for you. At the same it will tell you that it will only do so once per session, which likely means that it won't prompt you a second time if you happen to again be copying to yet another library not having these columns. I am not sure but I believe that the book also needs to be actually specifying a value for custom columns for this response to be triggered
