I have only read the first two but I would agree that the first was much stronger than the second. I'm undecided if I'll read the others or not. I do wonder if this too YA for the OP, but what impressed me was that the mood was so strong I had a physical reaction to it. I remember crying over throwing out stale cereal after I finished it.
