They are talking about a different set of stats. If you read a kepub, you get in book stats. This has things like how long to finish the chapter, how long for the next chapter and a bar chart showing the length of the chapters.

But, I agree with you about the other stats and have good news. If you add the following lines to your "Kobo eReader.conf" file, you will have a option on the book menu in the list to display the stats.

No, the covers are still not cached. If you use calibre to send the covers to the device, they will be used.
