Yup, I too enjoyed it a lot. Very original, which is always a good thing.

The Road is certainly worth mentioning; I thought it was excellent. You're right that the "zombies" are of the real kind, i.e. cannibals.

I don't know if you are open to or interested in YA at all, but I really liked "Life As We Knew It" by Susan Pfeffer.

I am in no way averse to YA books, it just depends on whether it's noticeable or not that they're written for a younger audience. Often it isn't, in which case it's all good.

Excellent book.

Steven Boyett's _Ariel_ and _Elegy Beach_ (I think they have everything but zombies and vampires though).

Very Shadowrun-esque, or? Not that I've read anything Shadowrun, but I know the setting. Certainly sufficiently interesting to pick up, along with
Mortality Bridge which I also happened upon.

Oh dear. I've had a look at those, a while back, and there's obviously a lot, a somewhat confusing lot, to chew on. I didn't have the inclination to dig very deep at the time, but this time I'll make an effort.

I think this must have been one of the very first post-apocalyptic stories I read, a very long time ago. It made quite an impression then, so maybe I should re-buy and re-read it.

Dean Ing's Single Combat and two other books make for a mildly amusing trilogy if one's interests run that direction.

They sound interesting, but perhaps not right now.
The remainder I have read and agree they are quite recommendable.

Thankfully it's a huge improvement on the movie, which I unfortunately saw first....
